You probably don’t want to know how just many microplastic organisms you’ve consumed inside of your body that are slowly destroying you from the inside. Doom and gloom aside, the environmental documentary dives into the scientific impact of our plastics-dominated consumption throughout all levels of society. It’s an informative piece diving into the history of plastic as a material and its ubiquity in everyday life.

• Screening at the 2024 DOXA Documentary Film Festival as part of the Justice Forum program at the SFU Djavad Mowafaghian Cinema on May 10 and also at the Rio Theatre on May 25.

Comedian Adam Pally and the voice of Idris Elba star in this amusing and entirely insubstantial Sonic the Hedgehog series spin-off of a road trip buddy comedy. Structured as basically a sidequest between supporting characters off on their own fun but unimportant mission, their wacky hijinx serves to mine deadpan humour between the mismatched pair, contrasting the ultra-serious alien echidna cartoon character with the dim-witted small-town deputy sheriff.

Humane (dir. Caitlin Cronenberg).

There’s a gleeful nihilism to the youngest Cronenberg’s single-location debut horror feature. Set in a climate change-ravaged near-future where 20% of the population needs to be culled, the indie film revolves around the grizzly premise of socioeconomic inequality through human self-sacrifice for a supposed greater societal good.

Jay Baruchel and Emily Hampshire star as siblings in a prominent family pushed to the edge of who to choose to die so everyone else can survive. Its sharp yet slight satire about the hollow steeliness of perceived affluence and privilege rings true through its twisted genre conventions.
